If music be the food of love, then PLAY ON!’s timeless classics "Take the 'A' Train," "Mood Indigo," "I Got it Bad and That Ain’t Good" and "It Don’t Mean a Thing," combine with stunning dance to make for a joyous feast in a fun and fresh take on a beloved comedy.

A Cabaret Evening with Singer-Songwriter and Composer

Josh Cleveland

by Alliance for New Music-Theatre

at the Arts Club of Washington

2017 I St. NW, Washington DC

Tuesday, October 7 at 7:00 pm

We welcome back DC’s own Josh Cleveland, fresh from completing the prestigious Broadcast Music Inc. program in NYC for professional creatives. With a hat tip to writer Ernest Hemingway, he’s titling the evening “One True Sentence." Join Josh for an evening of classic cabaret selections that illuminate versions of his own story as a young songwriter and educator, as well as original songs drawn from his works, including musical adaptations of The Great Gatsby and Despicable Me. We can't promise he will heal our nation's fractious discourse in one night of musical storytelling, but, while enjoying a specialty cocktail designed for the occasion, we can open our ears, share laughs, and find at least one or two true sentences along the way.

Furlough’s Paradise, a DC regional premiere by playwright a.k. payne, offers is a lyrical homecoming about what we carry, who carries us, and the freedom we dare to imagine. Winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, it is a tender, lyrical, and unflinchingly honest new play about memory, connection, and the pursuit of freedom—personal, political, and ancestral. With heartache, humor, and a deep longing for something like home, playwright a.k. payne offers a powerful portrait of Black kinship and the strength it takes to choose one another again and again. OTHER SIDE STORY.jpg

The Other Side Story” is Ángel Vázquez’ one-man comedy with music, about the brilliance and reliance of the Puerto Rican Diaspora in New York City. A hilarious one-man musical that traces Puerto Rican history in the U.S. since 1862. One apartment changes his life—and yours!

After playing “Hecho en Puelto Rico” to a sold-out Hostos Center in 2018, Vázquez is back. “The Other Side Story” (not West Side Story) is the story of an island Puerto Rican who finds himself on the streets of El Barrio, East Harlem, where he learns about the struggles and the triumphs of the Puerto Rican Diaspora. This is comedy based on true stories of the Diaspora.

This is GALA Theatre’s 50th Anniversary Season. Hugo and Rebecca Medrano had a vision rooted in excellence, community, and cultural leadership. Wont’ you celebrate their achievements with us?
