2022 Fall Season of Live & About – 12th Season

A Journey in Musical Languages across the Spectrum of Music-Theatre

Through Performance & Conversation

We hope you will join us this Fall as we re-open our Live & About Program - a unique outreach and community engagement series. As in past years we plan to do midweek evening shows and weekend matinees for each Outing. We have put together a very energetic and eclectic program for this Fall season with outings to four different productions in the DC area and introducing our group to new hosting theatre venues.

This is the schedule for our 2022 Fall Season:

September

REVOLTOSA: The Troublemaker or Variations on an 1897 Zarzuela for Today

at GALA Theatre

Thursday, Sept 22 @ 8pm  oSunday, Sept 25 @ 2pm

We will start the Fall season with a cultural gem - authentic Zarzuela - the classic Spanish music-theatre form, updated to the 1960’s.

Producing Artistic Director and Co-Founder of GALA Theatre Hugo Medrano proudly announces the show as part of an Illuminating, Affirming & Hilarious 2022-2023 Season. “As we emerge from the pandemic, the ‘Big Lie,’ and the increase in racial and gun violence,” states Mr. Medrano, “our 47th season provides a welcome respite to revel in stories that illuminate and affirm the human spirit with humor and laughter. With music by Ruperto Chapí and directed by José Luis Arellano (Helen Hayes Award winner) and Music Direction by David Peralto (Spain.)

Revoltosa is at its heart a simple love story about men and women, two different perspectives on the world, married couples who stop loving each other, and young lovers exploring their first flirtation. Brimming with secret jealousies and desires, the zarzuela Revoltosa is so popular, so Spanish… and yet so universal. With its unforgettable music, hearts will burst in joyful celebration. In Spanish with English surtitles. Won’t you join in this adventure and our first L&A to GALA Hispanic Theatre.

October

NOTEBOOKS OF LEONARDO DA VINCI

at Shakespeare Theatre

Sunday, October 16 @ 2pm or Thursday, October 20 7:30pm

Stunning Visual Feast - Written and Directed by Mary Zimmerman

Artistic Director, Susan Galbraith has long loved Mary’s body of work for she is always pushing the envelope. Written and directed by this Tony Award-winner and MacArthur “Genius” Award recipient, she brings the writings of Leonardo da Vinci to life in this stunning revival of one of her earliest creations. Comprised solely of text from the surviving notebooks of the 15th-century Renaissance man himself, Notebooks is “a true revelation” (The Chicago Tribune) that celebrates the interplay of science, art, and the human spirit in a glorious kaleidoscope of beauty and remarkable insight. Shakespeare Theater tackles arguably the greatest “crossover” artist-scientist-engineer by embracing a complex artist’s visionary exploration into the great Leonardo. (Certainly a bigger and more worthy star to feature than Brittney Spears.)

November

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND

at Constellation Theatre

Thursday, Nov 3 @ 8pm or Sunday, Nov 6 @ 2pm

As the show opens, a child is terrified by a tropical storm and the community comes together to comfort her with a story. On an island where people are separated by color and class, the four Gods (Earth, Water, Love and Death) place a bet. A young girl leaves her humble upbringing to pursue her true love, the Prince, only to be faced with an impossible choice. With Calypso-flavored music and fantastical storytelling, Once On This Island is a celebration of hope and kindness that will nourish your soul.

December

INTO THE WOODS

at Signature Theatre

Sunday, Dec 11 @ 2pm or Wednesday, Dec 14 @ 7:30pm

We continue our fairytale theme with our “holiday show” and what could be more fun than Sondheim served up by Signature Theater, a company that has made a name for itself as Sondheim’s heir apparent. Escape into a fantastical fairytale adventure where dreams come true, but not free. A trove of storybook characters intertwine as they chase their deepest desires through an enchanted forest. The master of lyrics, Sondheim has written some of his wittiest lines as well as achingly beautiful melodies. The euphoric score includes “Giants in the Sky,” “On the Steps of the Palace,” “No One Is Alone,” and “Children Will Listen.” As Jung said, “We must always go metaphorically “into the woods” to find our true selves.

“Live & About” is an outreach and community engagement series representing different Washington, DC theatre companies and shows across the spectrum of music-theatre.

Participants will enjoy the experience of attending performances as a group, expanding their appetites and critical appreciation for new forms, and supporting a variety of large and smaller music-theatre companies in our nation’s capital. After each show, they will have the opportunity to deepen their experience by engaging with other group members in an informal gathering and sharing in discussions learning from each other different interpretations.
