Maurice Saylor
Maurice Saylor’s music has been described as "irresistible from start to finish, clever, deeply engaging, and performed with enthusiasm and evident delight by everyone involved." With special affinities for vocal, chamber, stage, and silent film music, his tuneful and quirky scores often showcase an interest in unusual combinations of instruments and blur the boundaries of style and genre.
For the stage, Saylor has written music, and words, for opera, musical theater, dance, and incidental music for plays. His film scores have been written for the Snark Ensemble, which he co-founded in 2005, in order to present live performances of the composer/performers' new scores for vintage silent films.
In 2014 Saylor collaborated with Susan Galbraith on the musical fantasy, Vaněk Unleashed, which ran for ten performances in the Washington, DC area before before traveling to the Czech Republic. The show was enthusiastically received at The Prague Fringe Festival for which it was commissioned and received extensive coverage on Czech radio and television.
In 2006 Saylor was commissioned to create new jazz arrangements of five V&W songs by the father of Czech jazz, Jaroslav Jezek. Washington Musica Viva and the Embassy of the Czech Republic presented the set in honor of the Czech National Day celebrations. The performance also featured Saylor's own English singing translations. Washington Musica Viva hailed the work as their most popular composition and, in 2009 after numerous repeat performances, took the work to New York City for a performance at the Bohemian National Hall with Will Gartshore as the vocalist.
His music has been performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Library of Congress; the American Film Institute; the Library of Congress; and throughout the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. It has also been broadcast over both commercial and National Public Radio.
Snark Ensemble scores can be heard on two four-DVD sets from All Day Entertainment: Lost and Found: The Harry Langdon Collection(2007) and Becoming Charley Chase(2009). Saylor's magnum opus, The Hunting of the Snark: an Agony in Eight Fits and three Snark Ensemble silent film scores are available on CD from Naxos Records.
